Great night, or the next one is on us

Play the game through to the reveal. If your group did not have a great night, tell us within 7 days and your next story is free. Or your money back, if you prefer.

How it works

From invitation to the big reveal

  1. A hand holding a phone with a dark invitation and a red wax seal
    1

    Hand out the roles

Pick a story and fill in the names. Choose who plays whom, or deal the roles at random. Everyone gets a personal link; nobody can peek at another file.

Or deal the roles at random
  2. A young woman in bed, shocked by a new message on her phone
    2

The tension builds before the party

In the days before the party, a new part of your character's story lands on every phone. Read it, get into your role and prepare, so you arrive ready to play. In a hurry? Express gives everyone all the info at once.

  3. Friends in costume pointing at each other in front of a TV showing evidence
    3

    Play the night

Put the TV on. It runs the rounds, shows the evidence and holds the vote. You play along, without spoilers.

    Why this exists

This autumn I played a murder mystery with friends. The messages in the days before were the best part: we were in character before anyone rang the doorbell.

But halfway through the night nobody knew who was who any more, and the ending felt like a guess. So I built the version I wanted to play. The TV keeps the story moving, every round sums up what you know, and the ending makes sense.

    FAQ

    Good questions, straight answers

    What do we need?

One phone per player and a TV or laptop everyone can see. No printer and no app to install.

    How much does it cost?

€7.50 per person for a game night, so eight players pay €60. You pay once per game night, no subscription.

    How many players?

Most stories work with 4 to 24 players. The main roles always play; extra roles join as your group grows.

How long does a game take?

About 2.5 to 3 hours, in three rounds that fit nicely between the courses of a dinner.

How far ahead should we start?

With step by step, start about five days before the party: a new message arrives every day. Short on time? Express gives everyone all the information at once, even on the night itself.

Does the host know who did it?

No. The host steers the rounds but only sees the solution at the reveal, so you can play along.

Can we play in English and Dutch?

The app is in English and Dutch and every player picks their own language. Each story says which languages it comes in.

    What if someone cancels?

Change the cast until the night itself. Extra roles drop out without leaving loose ends.

What if we have more guests than the story takes?

Every story has extra roles written in from the start, with their own secrets and goals. They join without anyone noticing which roles are extra. Above the maximum, split into two games.
